How to identify anime from a screenshot
Anime identification rewards different signals than live action. There are no real faces to recognise, so the useful evidence is stylistic: line weight, palette, character design conventions, background painting technique and the era those choices belong to.

Studio and era tells
Studios have house looks that persist across shows: certain approaches to lighting and lens flare, particular background painting, recognisable compositing. Combined with era markers — cel-era grain and 4:3 framing versus modern digital gradients and widescreen — this alone narrows a frame to a plausible decade and a short list of studios.
Character design is the next filter. Eye shape and highlight style, hair silhouette, uniform design and the specific way a school uniform or fantasy armour is drawn are strongly franchise-specific.
Text is your best friend
Any Japanese text in the frame — a sign, a book cover, a phone screen, a title card — is high-value evidence. So are burned-in fansub credits, which frequently name the series outright.
If your frame has no text, look for a second frame that does. One text-bearing frame plus one character frame is a near-ideal pair.
Where anime identification struggles
Generic modern light-novel adaptations share a deliberately interchangeable visual grammar; a frame of a brown-haired protagonist in a classroom is close to unidentifiable from art style alone.
AI-upscaled and heavily filtered re-uploads distort line work and colour, which degrades the stylistic signals the model relies on. Prefer the original file over a re-shared, re-compressed copy.
