Every day people screenshot a frame from a stranger's TV, save a clip from a feed with no caption, or half-remember a line of dialogue from a film they watched a decade ago. Reverse image search answers a different question — it finds other web pages using the same picture — and forums answer slowly. There was no fast, free, honest tool for the actual question.

WhatMovieIsThis is that tool. Upload a frame, paste a video link or type what you remember, and get a title with the reasoning behind it. No account, no paywall, no upload quota.

The site is built and maintained by the WhatMovieIsThis team, an independent group of engineers and film enthusiasts. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated on behalf of any studio, streaming service, IMDb, TMDb, Rotten Tomatoes or Metacritic.

Editorial and product questions, corrections and takedown requests all go to hello@whatmovieisthis.com and are read by a person.

Identification runs on a general-purpose multimodal model that reasons about what a frame contains — faces, wardrobe, architecture, lighting, on-screen text — rather than matching pixels against an index. Dialogue and description queries run through the same model in text mode. The full pipeline is documented on the AI methodology page.

We publish a confidence score and an explanation with every answer because an unexplained AI guess is not useful. When the model is unsure, the interface says so and offers ranked alternatives instead of a single confident-looking wrong title.

We do not host, stream, mirror or link to pirated copies of any title. Watch links point to legal streaming, rental and purchase options, or to official trailers.

We do not sell uploaded images, and we do not build advertising profiles from what people search for. The privacy and image retention page sets out exactly what is and is not kept.
