Upload one or more screenshots from a movie, TV series, anime, or drama and our AI will identify it within seconds.
To identify a film from its poster, upload a photo of the poster to WhatMovieIsThis. The AI recognises the artwork, cast likenesses, typography and design era to name the movie even when the title text is unreadable or in another language, then returns the year, cast, ratings and where to watch.
When the title is unreadable
Posters are the one case where text should make identification trivial — until the text is in Japanese, Cyrillic or Hindi, or the photo is taken at an angle across a cinema lobby. The model treats typography as one clue among many, alongside the actors' likenesses, the composition conventions of the genre and the design language of the decade, so an unreadable title is not a dead end.
Alternative artwork and regional variants
A single film can ship a teaser poster, a theatrical one-sheet, a character series, a festival design and a completely different key art for each territory. Streaming services then commission their own thumbnails. All of these map back to the same title here, which is where a straight reverse image search tends to fail.
From poster to watchlist
Once identified you get the release year, director, cast, genre, runtime, IMDb, TMDb, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic scores, a spoiler-light synopsis, the trailer, similar films and legal ways to watch it in your country — enough to decide immediately whether it is worth your evening.
Frequently asked questions
Can it identify a poster in a language I cannot read?
+
Yes. Non-Latin and foreign-language posters are common inputs; the model uses artwork, faces and design conventions rather than relying on the title text.
Does alternative or fan-made artwork work?
+
Official alternative art and festival designs work well. Fan art can succeed when it depicts recognisable characters, but confidence will be lower.
Will a photo taken at an angle work?
+
Usually. Perspective distortion, glare and reflections reduce quality but rarely stop a match if the main artwork is visible.
Can it identify a streaming thumbnail rather than a poster?
+
Yes — platform thumbnails and cover art are handled the same way and map back to the original title.
